Parent’s Leave vs Parental Leave in Ireland: What’s the Difference?

Parent’s leave and parental leave sound almost identical – but in practice, they are two very different statutory entitlements under Irish employment law.

For employers, mixing them up can lead to payroll mistakes, incorrect employee guidance, or unnecessary admin. For employees, it can mean missed income support or confusion about when leave can be taken.

This guide clearly explains the difference between parent’s leave vs parental leave in Ireland, how each works in 2026, and how employers can support employees with confidence.

Parent’s Leave vs Parental Leave: a quick comparison

What is parent’s leave in Ireland?

Parent’s leave is a statutory entitlement that allows parents to take time off work during the first two years of their child’s life, or within two years of adoption placement.

Each parent is entitled to 9 weeks of parent’s leave, which can be taken:

      • As one continuous block, or
      • In separate weeks, at different times

The entitlement applies equally to both parents and is available to employees and self-employed workers.

        Is parent’s leave paid?

Parent’s leave itself is not paid by employers. However, most eligible parents can receive Parent’s Benefit from the Department of Social Protection while on leave. This benefit is currently paid for up to nine weeks at a weekly rate of €299, subject to meeting PRSI contribution requirements.

Some employers may choose to top up this payment, but this is entirely discretionary and not a legal requirement.  For payroll and HR teams, understanding this distinction is essential, particularly when advising employees on their entitlements and ensuring leave is processed accurately. The right payroll software supports this by automating calculations, reducing admin, and minimising the risk of costly mistakes.

What is parental leave in Ireland?

Parental leave is a separate entitlement designed to support parents over the longer term.

Each parent can take up to 26 weeks of unpaid parental leave per child, provided the leave is taken before the child turns:

          • 12 years of age, or
          • 16 years of age if the child has a long-term illness or disability

Key rules employers should be aware of

          • Parental leave is unpaid
          • Employees generally need 12 months’ continuous service
          • Leave can be taken in blocks, subject to agreement
          • Employers may postpone leave for up to 6 months if it would seriously disrupt the business, with written justification required
          •

Because there is no social welfare payment, parental leave often has a bigger operational impact, particularly for workforce planning and cover.

The most common source of confusion

Despite the similar names, these entitlements are not interchangeable.

            • Parent’s leave is short-term, linked to early childhood, and usually supported by a State payment
            • Parental leave is longer-term, unpaid, and more flexible in how it is taken

Importantly, employees may be entitled to both, provided they meet the relevant criteria.

How the SD Worx Parental Leave Calculator helps

Parental leave entitlement can quickly become complex, particularly when employees have multiple children, have already taken parental leave with a previous employer, or started employment at different points in time. These factors can make it difficult for HR and payroll teams to determine the correct entitlement with confidence.

With our free Parental Leave Calculator, you can gain a clear view of how much unpaid parental leave an employee is entitled to by factoring in the child’s date of birth, the employee’s start date, and any parental leave already taken. It also shows what entitlement remains, removing guesswork and uncertainty. This can help HR and payroll teams reduce back-and-forth with employees, provide consistent and accurate guidance, and ensure parental leave is managed correctly across the organisation.
